History of the Centre

In December of 1986, the Minister of Community and Social Services stated it would support the development of a new community-driven children's mental health service for the Sudbury area. Five principles were identified to guide the development of the service:
  • a new bilingual children's mental health corporation
  • clear lines of authority between MCSS and the new corporation
  • distinct service streams under the new corporation for both the francophone and non-francophone populations
  • mechanisms permitting split governing jurisdiction by this new Board over the management of culturally appropriate service streams
  • separate medical and non-medical service delivery.
A seven person Steering Committee submitted a report on its community consultation to the Ministry in August, 1987 and the Ministry announced its support to the proposed service in May 1989.

The new service called Children's Mental Health Services (Sudbury) / Services de Santé mentale pour enfants (Sudbury) was incorporated in the spring of 1990 and began operating at le Carrefour Francophone in December, 1990.

The Centre received its French Language Service designation in September 2002.

The Centre was fully accredited by Children’s Mental Health Ontario in November 2004.

In August 2005, the Centre’s service delivery area was expanded to include the Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin and in August 2007, the Developmental Clinical Services were transferred to the Centre from the Northeast Mental Health Centre.

The Centre’s Letters Patent were amended in July 2005 and the Centre’s name was changed to the Child and Family Centre / Centre de l’enfant et de la famille / Ngodweaangizwin Aaskaagewin. In December 2007 Supplementary Letters Patent modified the Objects of the Corporation and designation as a Charitable Organisation was received.

Since its inception, the Centre operated offices in Sudbury at various locations. Its present locations consist of:

  • 319 Lasalle Boulevard, Sudbury
  • 62 Frood Road, Sudbury
  • 18 Birch Street, Chapleau
  • 90 Gray Street, Espanola
  • 11 Meredith Street, Little Current.
The Centre started with 43 employees and grew to a present day complement of 115 full-time, part- time and casual employees. Local 666 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union represents the Centre’s bargaining unit employees.

Since 1990 the number of clients grew from 980 to approximately 2,300 clients served in 2007/08.
