INTENSIVE SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION PROGRAM
ISSP

Purpose of program:

The Intensive Support and Supervision Program brings together workers from the children’s mental health, youth justice and developmental sectors to address some of the underlying causes of youth crime Services provided include:
  • An alternative to custody that is open to the judge at the time of sentencing.
  • Intensive clinical support and community supervision.
  • A community and team approach that focuses on treatment.

Admission criteria and process:

The referral through the courts requires screening to ensure criteria for participation are met. Screening assessment recommendations will be included as part of the pre-sentence report.

Young persons exhibiting severe mental health problems and who have repeatedly broken the law. Mental health diagnoses may include but are not restricted to:
  • Schizophrenia spectrum disorders
  • Mood disorders (major depression disorder, or bipolar disorder which may include chronic suicidal or self-harming behaviour)
  • Severe anxiety disorders (post-traumatic stress disorder, severe social anxiety disorder, or obsessive/compulsive disorders)
  • Young persons diagnosed with a developmental delay such as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (e.g. Autism, Asperger’s Disorder) or Global Intellectual Delay
  • Dual diagnoses consisting of some of the combination above
  • Substance use disorders co-existing with the above will be integrated into the treatment.
